Area of Study 1 - Analytical Chemistry
Flame tests
This site has a comprehensive description of what's going on in flame tests and emission spectra. (Tends a little more to the physics side than what is presented in our text) Towards the end of the page is a click on flame test prac. No messy spills and dirty bunsens but not as much fun as doing them yourself. It also shows some emission spectra from several substances. Worth a look!
Paper Chromatography
Chemistry Hypermedia Site
This site contains a lot of information on analytical chemistry, all of the techniques discussed in this outcome as well as information on equilibria. There are good photos and schematic diagrams of the instrumentation- some with mini quizzes. Well worth a visit! Either use the above link to the site and navigate from there or use the specific page links below.
Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy
Atomic Emission Spectroscopy
UV-Vis Spectroscopy
Chromatography
Gas Chromatography
High Performance Liquid Chromatography
Thin-layer Chromatography
Electrophoresis
I have written a number of quizzes to go with our course so you will find these suitable for test or exam practice. The ones pertaining to this outcome are:-
Analytical Chemistry
This is a "Who wants to be a Millionaire" style quiz on definitions and techniques for this outcome
Analytical Techniques
A mixture of flashcard type games here- matching, concentration, etc. covering all the techniques.
Gravimetric Analysis - flowchart Put the steps in the correct order. More flowcharts on the way - stay tuned.
Here is a site put forward by the University of Wisconsin that I found using the CEA page (see links page). There are some great pages on many of the lab techniques we use. Each section uses pictures, videos and self-tests to get the message across. The videos are very good but if you have a slow connection or a download limit, you will find many of these files a bit too big (up to 8MB for some!) Here are the ones relevant to this area of study.
Volumetric flask - preparing a standard solution
Check out the video where Barbie finds out why to use a stopper not a thumb!
Titration
Paper Chromatography
Gas Chromatography
UV-Vis Spectrometry
Gets in deeper than we need, but you might find some of it useful.
Nelson Chemistry Study Guide - Unit 3
A very helpful site from the makers of one of the textbooks.
There is also discussion of several analytical techniques at the School of Science and Mathematics although it very quickly gets too technical for our needs.
HMChem
This site includes short movies and animations of things like flame tests (2 per movie) and titrations. BYO popcorn ;) There are also simulations. The Spectrocopy sim is very promising although it takes a while to load and I had trouble getting it to scan the unknown. Also the limiting reagent sim is useful if you have trouble with the idea of things being in excess.
Chem 101
More flame test videos- not as good as the site above though.
Area of Study 2 - Equilibrium
Worked problems
-from the Questions section.
Theory
-from the Chemistry Hypermedia Project site.
Practice problems
-from the same site
Reaction rates & Equilibrium
Start on this page with Activation energy, exothermic and endothermic reactions, then keep moving forward through the pages to see: Rates of reaction, catalysts, Equilibria, Le Chatelier's Principle. Worth a read! Some nice animations on the way!
More theory
-from RJClarkson's site.
pH and pOH quiz
Who wants to be a millionaire style. Suitable for 11 and 12.
pH Scale
A put them in the right order quiz. For a general idea of the way things lie!
Equilibrium An English quiz- good for standard Le Chatelier problems.
Area of Study 3- Industrial Chemistry
Industrial Chemistry
20 questions covering the production of sulfuric acid and petrochemicals.
In the petrochemicals section, we review our carbon chemistry, polymers and include some new functional groups. These links are taken from the Unit 1 page and may be of some use with this part of the course.
Carbon Chemistry Quiz
Another homegrown quiz. This is a fairly short quiz with a range of different types of questions. Suitable for Unit 1 or Year 10 Carbon Chemistry students.
The Macrogalleria
This is a very comprehensive site on polymers. Level 1 shows polymers in everyday items. Level 2 shows the structure of polymers with some 3d models you can flip about. Polythene, polypropene and polystyrene are among the many here. Level 3 shows crosslinking, thermosetting and thermoplastic polymers.
Polymer Discovery Trail (Australian)
Organic Molecules Tutorial
for some already made models of organic compounds- alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, various functional groups. Uses a 3d viewer.
Organic Chemistry A quiz from another author at the Quia site.
